Opinionated Templates, Insertion Layers

The UX pattern that scales for agent platforms: ship a strong opinion so users get value in seconds, but make every layer an insertion point so power users can override anything. Zero-config that is also fully configurable.

The pattern

  • Ship an opinion. Defaults that work immediately - e.g. Agent Machines bundling 155 skills so a new user gets value in ~30 seconds, not after a configuration project.
  • Every layer is an insertion point. Skills, services, runtime, scheduling - each default is replaceable, so the opinion never becomes a cage. Kevin's framing: "opinionated templates + insertion layers is the UX pattern that scales." Source: Cursor transcript, Agent-Machines, 2026-05

The reference model is explicit: "the Vercel/Next.js playbook - zero-config that's fully configurable." Source: Cursor transcript, Agent-Machines, 2026-05

Why it matters

This resolves the usual tension between "capable but empty" (a bare framework) and "easy but rigid" (a closed product). It's the same shape as constraints over context in design (Sigil presets give an opinion you can still override) and Loop's verified-skills defaults - a default-rich surface that stays open at every layer.
