Startup School made San Francisco's density visible: in a roughly seven-by-seven-mile city, repeated proximity turns people followed online into conversations, problems, and things worth building.

The Story

Kevin attended YC Startup School on July 25 and 26, 2026. His public posts moved between the spectacle and the substance: an AI office-hours simulator in a physical booth, Peter Steinberger's "I got Mogged by an anime girl" slide, the Startup School sign being carried away, and the recurring first-principles theme in talks by Alexandr Wang, Patrick Collison, and Jensen Huang. One joke became the clearest public artifact. Kevin posted, "alexandr wang has a top 10 mane." It reached 86,030 views, 358 likes, and seven reposts by the July 29 export. Alexandr replied with a wolf emoji, and Y Combinator and Maryam Aly later reposted it. Garry Tan reposted and liked Kevin's Peter Steinberger post from the same afternoon. The screenshots matter because they correct the easy-to-conflate version of the story: Garry amplified a different Startup School post, not the Alexandr photo. The deeper post argued that being blocked can precede product-market fit. Alexandr described training-data friction while building models at MIT; Kevin connected that to his own inability to retrieve useful material from 1,500 bookmarks, which led him to build the wiki and its X ingestion loop. Two other encounters came from Kevin's firsthand recollection: an OpenAI intern carrying a briefcase with GPT-4o "inside," and a friend of the person behind Molly Tea's New York locations explaining the live split from the China business. The latter was not idle lore: Molly Tea's China-based company and several New York locations were in an active trademark and contract dispute in June 2026. The reusable frame is proximity, not celebrity. San Francisco compresses builders, designers, researchers, and founders into about 49 square miles. Repeatedly showing up makes strange collisions ordinary. Those conversations expose concrete problems, and the problems often become things worth building.

A couple months earlier, I met Evil Rabbit, Vercel's founding designer and former head of design, at Designers & Machines. He showed us performant shaders. We took a photo after.

Then there was the OpenAI intern carrying a briefcase with GPT-4o "inside," and the friend of the person behind Molly Tea's New York shops explaining why they had split from the China business.

This keeps happening here. SF is so small that you keep running into the craziest people.

The sharpest line from Startup School came from Alexandr: start from first principles. He built Scale after training-data friction blocked his own work.

SF has a social version of that lesson. Put enough builders, designers, researchers, and founders into 49 square miles. Keep showing up. The people you follow become conversations. The conversations expose problems. The problems become things worth building.

The talks were useful. The city around them was the real school.
