Type Foundries Reference

The foundries behind the type — the studios making the typefaces worth knowing, and where to license or discover them. The typographic counterpart to Design Agencies Reference (studios behind the sites). For the specific typefaces Kevin uses (free + paid) and free-font sources, see Fonts — Picks & Free; for the variable-font technique (axes, subsetting, CLS) see Variable Fonts 2026.

A typeface is the fastest way to make a product feel intentional, and picking the right foundry — not just the right font — is how you escape the Inter/Helvetica default and get type with a point of view. Organized by independent retail foundries (the envelope-pushers), distribution platforms, and libre/open-source.

Independent foundries (the bar)

The retail foundries whose releases set contemporary type direction. Most ship free trials; license for production.

Libre / open-source foundries

For free, openly-licensed and experimental type — specific picks and the full set live in Fonts — Picks & Free.

Source Focus
Velvetyne (velvetyne.fr) Since 2010 — libre, experimental French foundry, plus the "Velvetyne Libre Friends" network of open foundries.
Open Foundry (open-foundry.com) Curated open-source typefaces (e.g. Tex Gyre Heros, a libre Helvetica).
RSMS / Rasmus Andersson (rsms/inter) Canonical source for Inter Font, the screen-first UI family. Use official releases/CSS/npm rather than Google Fonts when Inter is intentionally selected.
Collletttivo (collletttivo.it) Milan-based open-source type foundry and type/design practice, established in 2017. The site frames it as the first Italian open-source digital type foundry, with 16 open-source typefaces and specimen pages for faces such as Borges, Ronzino, Aujournuit, Absans, Coconat, Apfel Grotezk, and Sinistre.
Uncut.wtf Curated free/open grotesks and display faces.
Free Faces Gallery of free typefaces.

These are the concrete font pages Kevin's design folder points at. Use them as starting points, then evaluate in the actual product context and route open/free picks through Fonts — Picks & Free.

Type tools

  • FontTrio (fonttrio.xyz) — font-pairing suggestions tuned for shadcn/Tailwind stacks.
  • Fonts In Use — typography in the wild, searchable by typeface and industry.
  • Space Type Generator, Arcotype Font Browser, and Pica Font Manager — browse and preview type. Arcotype sorts Google Fonts by visual similarity; Pica is the local macOS manager for browsing, organizing, and activating foundry libraries.

The 2026 "font sites iceberg" is a useful discovery map rather than a canonical ranking. It keeps the obvious platforms at the surface (Google Fonts, Adobe Fonts, Dafont), then pushes designers toward independent foundries and discovery shelves such as ABC Dinamo, Velvetyne, Pangram Pangram, OH no Type Co, Collletttivo, Swiss Typefaces, Commercial Type, Future Fonts, Fonts In Use, Grilli Type, Klim Type, Occupant Fonts, and Arcotype Font Browser. Yahyavision's shortlist is a compact type-direction moodboard, not a license checklist. It mixes free/common UI choices (Instrument Serif, DM Serif Display, DM Mono, Inter, Bricolage Grotesque, Darker Grotesque) with commercial/source-checked faces such as Helvetica Neue, Tusker Grotesk, and Coolvetica-style display choices. Use the artifact to decide the type role first, then verify foundry, license, and distribution source before adoption. Source: X/@yahyavision and local image review, 2026-07-03

  • Pairing for a shadcn build → FontTrio, then audition in context via Arcotype Font Browser.
  • The studios behind the sites (not the type) → Design Agencies Reference.
