Creative Hobbies and Play

Play keeps the builder from becoming only an operator. It preserves wonder, useless making, and non-instrumental taste.

This is the "never go numb to how cool the world is" thread of the Mind and Spirit pillar. Kevin keeps a stack of hands-on, playful hobbies that have nothing to do with deadlines: Legos (including a Lego Snorlax), Star Wars, gaming (It Takes Two, Black Myth: Wukong, Horizon Zero Dawn), drawing (he hand-drew a tote bag and geeks out over anatomy sketches), and crochet. They are creative outlets and pure fun at once. Source: User, 2026-06; Kevin Liu

Why they matter

The hobbies are not a break from being a builder, they are the same instinct pointed at joy instead of output. Making things with his hands, getting lost in a game's world, building a Lego set: all of it keeps the creative muscle warm and the sense of wonder alive, which feeds back into the work and the relationships. A maker who only ever makes for work eventually goes flat. Source: User, 2026-06

The Philosophy

The point of play is that it is not optimized. It lets Kevin make without the pressure to monetize, recruit, impress, or ship. That matters because a high-agency builder can accidentally route every interest into productivity. Creative hobbies protect the part of taste that comes from curiosity rather than ambition. This also feeds the work indirectly. Lego trains composition and patience. Games train world-reading and systems feel. Drawing trains observation. Crochet trains material constraint and rhythm. None of these need to justify themselves as career leverage, but they still expand the sensory library that taste draws from. Source: philosophy refinement pass, 2026-06-29

Failure Mode

The failure mode is converting every hobby into a side quest with KPIs. Wonder dies when everything must prove ROI. The corrective is to keep some making useless on purpose.
