Friends vs Friend Group

A distinction worth defending. Friends are individual relationships you maintain one-by-one. A friend group is a social structure with its own gravity, norms, and group identity. The two are different goods, and one can substitute for the other only weakly.

Why this is its own page

Most people collapse "friends" and "friend group" into one thing. They behave differently:

Dimension Individual friends Friend group
Maintenance cost High per friend, scales linearly Low per friend (group dynamics carry it), but the group itself takes work
Failure mode Drift, distance, slow fade Cliques, drama, sudden fracture
Replenishment Made one at a time, intentional Often inherited from school / work / hobby cohort
What they give Depth, specific resonance, secrets Belonging, default plans, identity reinforcement
What they don't Default Friday-night plans The deep specific conversation

Kevin's existing wiki vocabulary already encodes some of this:

  • The people/ directory currently has 80+ individual person pages. The people layer is well-instrumented; the group layer isn't.
