Windsurf Editor

Agentic AI IDE, originally from Codeium. After a dramatic 2025 ownership saga, Windsurf's people split between Google and the remaining product was acquired by Cognition (maker of Devin). Now an agentic IDE with access to the latest Claude models.

What it is

Windsurf is an agentic integrated development environment - a VS Code-style editor built around an AI agent ("Cascade") that can read, plan across, and edit a whole codebase rather than autocomplete a line at a time. It was the IDE product of Codeium and became one of the two flagship AI IDEs of 2025 alongside Cursor. The 2025 ownership saga

Windsurf was at the center of the year's most chaotic AI-coding M&A sequence:

  • An OpenAI offer of roughly $3B to acquire Windsurf expired.
  • Hours later, Google hired away CEO Varun Mohan, co-founder Douglas Chen, and research leaders in a ~$2.4B reverse-acquihire, leaving most of the ~250-person team behind.
  • On July 14, 2025, Cognition (the startup behind the autonomous coding agent Devin) signed a definitive agreement to acquire the rest of Windsurf - the IDE, IP, trademark, brand, a business with ~$82M ARR and 350+ enterprise customers, and the employees Google did not hire. Cognition's stated plan: keep Windsurf's IDE running with full access to the latest Claude models while folding its capabilities into Cognition's Devin-centric products over time.

Where it fits Kevin's stack

Windsurf is the main agentic-IDE alternative to Kevin's primary editor, Cursor (Cursor 2.0 and Composer). Its trajectory is a useful market signal: the AI-IDE category consolidated fast, and the Windsurf-into-Cognition arc shows IDEs and autonomous agents (Devin) converging.
